Chinnaswamy Stadium IPL 2026 Verdict: The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium’s final clearance to host IPL 2026 will be announced on Monday, March 16, 2026, following a detailed inspection meeting on Friday, March 13, between the Karnataka Government’s Expert Committee, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
The outcome is critical for RCB’s opening match of IPL 2026 — RCB vs SRH on March 28 — which is scheduled to be played at the iconic Bengaluru venue. See the full IPL 2026 Schedule and RCB’s full squad.

What Happened at the March 13 Inspection?
On Friday, March 13, KSCA officials and RCB representatives met the Expert Committee constituted by the Government of Karnataka at the Karnataka State Cricket Association premises. The KSCA delivered a comprehensive presentation covering all infrastructural upgrades, new crowd management arrangements and safety measures undertaken at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium under Phase-I of the compliance framework.
According to KSCA spokesperson Vinay Mruthyunjaya, the discussions were constructive and all stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that matches are conducted safely and smoothly. However, the committee has not yet issued its final verdict. The formal decision is expected by the evening of Monday, March 16.
Background: The Chinnaswamy Stampede Tragedy
The stadium has not hosted a single competitive cricket match since June 4, 2025, when a catastrophic crowd surge occurred during RCB’s IPL 2025 title celebration victory parade. Approximately 250,000 fans converged on the streets around the stadium, leading to a stampede that killed 11 people and injured over 50 others. The tragedy prompted immediate investigations and a full review of the stadium’s safety infrastructure.
Following the probe, the Karnataka government constituted an Expert Committee and commissioned the Justice John Michael D’Cunha Report, which laid out strict recommendations on ticketing, crowd regulation, entry/exit management and emergency response protocols.
Safety Upgrades at Chinnaswamy Stadium
The KSCA and RCB have undertaken extensive safety upgrades at the ground ahead of IPL 2026, including:
- Multiple new entry gates installed to reduce bottlenecks and crush points
- Widened existing entry/exit passages for faster crowd dispersal
- New dedicated emergency routes for faster access by emergency services
- New holding area near the old National Cricket Academy (NCA) facility to manage pre-match crowd build-up
- New direct entry and exit routes linked to peripheral infrastructure
- AI-enabled surveillance cameras — RCB proposed installing 300–350 smart cameras to monitor crowd movement in real time, with the franchise offering to bear the full ₹4.5 crore cost
- Stricter ticketing controls to prevent overcrowding and unauthorised entry
- Coordinated law enforcement plan with detailed assignment for Bengaluru Police on match days
Earlier Government Clearance (February 12)
Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar first confirmed clearance in principle on February 12, 2026, announcing on X: “In the interest of the sport and its fans, the Cabinet today has taken an important decision to permit the conduct of IPL matches at Chinnaswamy Stadium, while keeping public safety paramount.” However, that clearance was conditional — pending verification of the Phase-I compliance work. The March 13 inspection was the next formal step, with the final decision now expected on March 16.
What Happens If Chinnaswamy Does NOT Get Clearance?
If the stadium fails to receive clearance on March 16, RCB and BCCI would have very little time to find an alternative venue before the March 28 opener. Earlier reports suggested RCB had explored the possibility of using DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai as a temporary home venue — they had reportedly reached out to Mumbai Indians for its availability. RCB also have a confirmed secondary home venue this season at Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur, where they are scheduled to play 2 of their 7 home games.
What Happens If Chinnaswamy Gets Full Clearance?
RCB will play 5 home matches at Chinnaswamy and 2 in Raipur during IPL 2026. The home schedule at Chinnaswamy:
- Match 1: RCB vs SRH — March 28 (7:30 PM IST)
- Match 11: RCB vs CSK — April 5 (7:30 PM IST) — Virat Kohli vs MS Dhoni at Chinnaswamy
- 3 more home matches in the second phase (dates TBC pending full schedule announcement)
As defending champions, RCB also hold the right to host the IPL 2026 Final at Chinnaswamy, making this clearance decision even more significant.
