KKR Injury Crisis: Harshit Rana Out for Entire IPL 2026, Pathirana Still in Rehab — Pace Attack in Ruins

March 16, 2026: Of all 10 IPL franchises heading into IPL 2026, Kolkata Knight Riders are the worst-hit by injuries. With the season just 12 days away, KKR have confirmed that Harshit Rana is out for the entire season, their ₹18 crore buy Matheesha Pathirana is still in rehab in Colombo and will only arrive in India on March 17 — giving him under two weeks to prepare. And they’ve opted against bringing in a replacement for Pathirana despite the tight timeline. See the full KKR IPL 2026 Squad.

Harshit Rana — Out for the Entire IPL 2026 Season

The news on Harshit Rana is the most severe. The young India fast bowler — spotted on crutches at the BCCI Naman Awards ceremony last week — underwent knee surgery in February 2026 and requires three months of recovery. This rules him out for the entire IPL 2026 season, which runs until May 31.

Rana was a key pace option for KKR, having broken through at the highest level this year and earning his India call-up on the back of strong domestic performances. He was expected to be a primary pace weapon for KKR alongside Pathirana. That plan is now in tatters.

Matheesha Pathirana — Still in Colombo, Arrives March 17

KKR’s biggest auction buy — Matheesha Pathirana at ₹18 crore (second most expensive overseas player after Cameron Green’s ₹25.20 crore to the same club) — is also racing against time. The Sri Lanka pace sensation has been in Colombo doing rehabilitation for a calf injury and hasn’t travelled to India yet.

Pathirana arrived in India on March 17, giving him just 11 days to train and prepare before KKR’s first match — MI vs KKR on March 29 at Wankhede Stadium. Given the severity of calf injuries for pace bowlers and the lack of match practice, there are genuine doubts about whether Pathirana will be fully match-sharp for the early rounds. KKR Opt Against Injury Replacement for Pathirana

In a significant decision, KKR have opted against applying for an injury replacement for Pathirana despite his late arrival and fitness concerns. This means they are backing him to be available, at least eventually — but it leaves them exposed if he’s not ready for the early rounds.

The decision also reflects KKR’s confidence that their squad depth can manage the initial games. With Cameron Green, Sunil Narine, Andre Russell and Ajinkya Rahane headlining the squad, their batting and all-round options remain strong. Their pace attack, however, is significantly depleted. Read: Blessing Muzarabani joins KKR — already an important addition given these injury concerns.

KKR’s Injury Crisis — Full Picture

Player Role Injury Status
Harshit Rana Fast bowler Knee surgery (Feb 2026) 🔴 OUT — entire season
Matheesha Pathirana Fast bowler (₹18cr) Calf injury 🟡 Arrives March 17, race to be fit

Who Fills the Pace Void for KKR?

Without Rana all season and with Pathirana a doubt for early games, KKR must rely heavily on:

  • Blessing Muzarabani — the Zimbabwe giant joins KKR as Mustafizur Rahman’s replacement. At 6’7″ with express pace, he provides immediate impact. Read: Muzarabani KKR story
  • Umesh Yadav / Varun Chakravarthy — domestic pace + spin options
  • Andre Russell — the West Indian all-rounder can contribute pace in the death overs
  • Cameron Green — pace all-rounder at ₹25.20 crore, can fill bowling overs if needed

Is KKR’s Title Challenge Derailed?

KKR were tipped as one of the favourites for IPL 2026, with a squad packed with match-winners. Cameron Green’s addition gave them arguably the most explosive overseas combination in the tournament alongside Sunil Narine and Andre Russell. But the double injury blow to their pace attack changes the equation significantly.

KKR’s bowling attack without both Rana and (potentially) Pathirana looks significantly thin on genuine pace threat. The burden on Muzarabani is enormous for a player who has arrived with essentially no preparation time — and on Green to contribute more bowling overs than originally planned.

KKR’s first match is March 29 — MI vs KKR at Wankhede. With Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah for MI, KKR need their best pace lineup available from game one.
