Blessing Muzarabani Joins KKR: Zimbabwe Pacer Replaces Mustafizur Rahman for IPL 2026

Kolkata Knight Riders have signed Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani as the replacement for Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman, who was released from the squad on BCCI directive in January 2026. The towering 6-foot-8 right-arm seamer chose to skip the Pakistan Super League 2026 to join KKR — a major statement of intent ahead of IPL 2026 which begins on March 28.

Why Was Mustafizur Rahman Released?

Mustafizur Rahman was bought by KKR for ₹9.20 crore at the IPL 2026 auction in December 2025. However, following a wave of anti-Hindu violence in Bangladesh in 2025 and the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das in December 2025, tensions between India and Bangladesh escalated sharply. In January 2026, the BCCI requested KKR to release the Bangladeshi pacer from their squad, and the franchise complied. The BCCI also permitted KKR to sign a replacement player. Bangladesh subsequently banned IPL broadcasts in response to the development. The matter also led to the BCCI putting the Indian tour of Bangladesh on hold.

Who Is Blessing Muzarabani?

Blessing Muzarabani is Zimbabwe’s premier fast bowler and one of the most exciting pacers in world cricket right now. Here are his key stats and highlights:

  • Age: 26 years old
  • Height: 6 feet 8 inches — one of the tallest fast bowlers in international cricket
  • T20I record: 106 wickets in 89 matches at an average of 21.34
  • T20 World Cup 2026: 13 wickets in 6 matches — the fourth-highest wicket-taker in the entire tournament
  • Bowling style: Right-arm fast-medium; uses height to extract steep bounce, and has a lethal slower ball that mimics the style used by Mustafizur Rahman

Why Did Muzarabani Choose IPL Over PSL?

Muzarabani had been set to play for Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League 2026. His decision to leave the PSL and join KKR for the IPL signals how highly he values the IPL opportunity. The IPL remains the world’s most lucrative T20 cricket league and KKR — a franchise backed by Shah Rukh Khan — is one of its most glamorous clubs. For Muzarabani, this could be his breakthrough moment on the global stage.

How Does Muzarabani Fit Into KKR’s Plans?

KKR are facing a significant bowling crisis ahead of IPL 2026. In addition to losing Mustafizur Rahman, Harshit Rana has been ruled out of the entire season with a knee injury, and Matheesha Pathirana (signed for ₹18 crore) remains doubtful due to his own fitness concerns. This means Muzarabani could find himself thrust into a frontline role much sooner than anyone anticipated.

His skillset — particularly his slower ball and ability to take wickets at the death — makes him a direct functional replacement for Mustafizur. His raw pace and natural bounce from his towering height also add a dimension KKR’s attack desperately needs. Alongside Vaibhav Arora, he could form KKR’s new-ball and death-bowling combination in the absence of Rana.

KKR’s Opening Fixtures

KKR’s first four Phase 1 fixtures in IPL 2026 are:

  • Match 2: MI vs KKR — March 29, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai (7:30 PM IST)
  • Match 6: KKR vs SRH — April 2, Eden Gardens, Kolkata (7:30 PM IST)
  • Match 12: KKR vs PBKS — April 6, Eden Gardens, Kolkata (7:30 PM IST)
  • Match 15: KKR vs LSG — April 9, Eden Gardens, Kolkata (7:30 PM IST)

Muzarabani will be hoping to make an immediate impact, particularly at Eden Gardens where his steep bounce and pace could be a handful on Kolkata’s traditionally sporting pitch.
